Acer palmatum — Smooth Japanese Maple

An early 19th century introduction frequently grown in gardens. Its numerous cultivars are rather less frequent.

The small opposite leaves are toothed, but with a fairly smooth outline, and are deeply five-lobed. Reddish keys are produced.

f. dissectum covers trees with feathery foliage, including the cultivar ‘Dissectum Atropurpureum’ with purplish foliage.
