Aesculus hippocastaneum — Horse Chestnut

An early 17th century introduction from the Balkan region, now very common as a mature tree.

The leaves are large and palmate, usually with seven unstalked leaflets. The buds are large and sticky. The flowers appear white at a distance, but include reds and yellows when seen at close quarters. The fruit are the familiar conkers.

‘Baumannii’ is a double-flowered clone (with no conkers).
