Chamaecyparis pisifera — Sawara Cypress
Introduced from Japan in mid-Victorian times. The type tree is infrequent, but many of the cultivars are common.
The leaves of the type tree have spreading points, and have an acrid resinous smell when crushed.
Cultivars include ‘Filifera Aurea’ with thread-like adult foliage, bright yellow in sun, ‘Plumosa’ with prickly juvenile foliage, and ‘Squarrosa’ with soft juvenile foliage.
