Gleditsia triacanthos — Honey Locust

A fairly common tree, introduced from America at the beginning of the 18th century.

The leaflets of the alternate pinnate leaves have a more elongated look than those of False Acacia. The buds are tiny and protected by up to three thorns. Large black runner-bean-like pods are produced in summer and persist over winter.

‘Sunburst’ is a frequent yellow form, but less bright than the ‘Frisia’ cultivar of False Acacia.
