Liriodendron tulipifera — Tulip Tree
A fairly frequent 17th-century introduction from America.
The distinctive shape of the alternate leaves is unmistakeable. The buds are also distinctive, large and flat like flippers. Yellowish tulip-like flowers are produced in warm summers, and give rise to pointed, magnolia-like fruit.
‘Aureomarginatum’ has young leaves with yellow margins.
