Platanus x hispanica — London Plane

A very common hybrid of Oriental Plane with Buttonwood (P.occidentalis), introduced in the 17th century.

The alternate leaves are thick, with large teeth, and resemble those of the opposite-leaved Sycamore, but the lobing is very variable and young leaves may be almost round. Red flowers are produced in spring which give rise to similar ball-like fruit. The bark is highly distinctive. Buds are reddish and asymmetric.

There are a number of different crosses show different parental features to different degrees, some looking very similar to Oriental Plane.
