Populus trichocarpa — Western Balsam Poplar

An increasingly uncommon tree, due to its susceptibility to canker; introduced from America at the end of the 19th century.

The alternate leaves are elongated and a dirty grey-green below. A strong balsam smell is produced by the ripening buds in spring.
