Prunus cerasifera — Myrobalan Plum
An abundant early introduction, widely naturalised.
The alternate leaves are singly toothed and broader towards the tip of the leaf. The bark is dark grey. The white flowers emerge from green flower buds before those of any other common spring-flowering cherry. Green plums are produced which ripen red in summer.
‘Pissardii’ is a common ornamental selection with purple foliage and white flowers which appear pink at a distance due to the deep pink flower buds.
‘Nigra’ is a similarly common cultivar with purple foliage and pink flowers.
‘Hessei’ is an uncommon form with brown foliage and greenish-brown flower buds opening to show white flowers.
