Prunus sargentii — Sargent's Cherry
A common late 19th century introduction from Japan.
The relatively large alternate leaves have sharp but more or less unwhiskered teeth. The single pink flowers appear before those of any Japanese flowering cherry, and contrast strongly with the emerging red leaves.
