Quercus ilex — Holm Oak

An early introduction from the Mediterranean region.

The alternate leaves are evergreen and shiny and resemble weakly-spined Holly, although they are grey-felted beneath. The new leaves at the start of summer are paler and have a marked effect on the tree's appearance. Yellow catkins appear with the new leaves. The acorns have pointed tips.
