Thuja occidentalis — Eastern White Cedar

An uncommon introduction from America (in 1536, the first American tree introduced to Britain), but with many common cultivars.

The leaves are similar to those of Western Red Cedar but have a more apple-like smell. The cones ripen yellowish-brown.

(Potentially) tree-sized cultivars include:
  ‘Holmstrup’, a common cultivar with bright green foliage often in vertical plates
  ‘Rheingold’, a very common bushy form with tarnished gold foliage
  ‘Spiralis’, a less common but very distinctive narrow tree with upcurled sprays.
