Abies nordmannia — Caucasian Fir

Europe's tallest tree, introduced to Britain by the Victorians. Sold as an expensive Christmas tree and therefore sometimes seen planted out in gardens.

The leaves are relatively short and forward-pointing and produced at all angles above the shoot. The cones are very distinctive, the pointed brown bract scales contrasting nicely (when mature) with the purple-grey cone.
