Alnus cordata — Italian Alder

An early-19th century introduction, common as a street tree.

Usually forms a neat spire. The alternate leaves are glossy and finely toothed, rather like those of Common Pear. Buds are stalked. Catkins are produced in spring. The cone is larger than that of other common alders.
