Betula pubescens — Downy Birch

An abundant native tree, generally on damper soils than Silver Birch.

The foliage does not weep. The alternate leaves tend to have a more rounded base than Silver Birch and to be more nearly single-toothed. The bark lacks the black diamonds of Silver Birch. The shoot is usually hairy.
