Corylus avellana — Common Hazel

A common native bushy tree.

The round, alternate leaves are rather untidy and floppy and double-toothed. buds are green and fat. The male catkins are striking in late winter. The nuts are often stripped by squirrels before they ripen.

‘Contorta’ (Corkscrew Hazel) is a weird cultivar sometimes seen with wildly twisting shoots and leaves.

‘Pendula’ is a rare weeping form.
