Juniperus communis — Common Juniper

An increasingly rare native tree, frequently planted in its fastigiate forms.

All leaves are juvenile, in groups of three, with a single white band in the inside of the needle. Berries ripen black after three years (and provide the traditional flavouring for gin).

‘Stricta’ (Irish Juniper) is the narrow fastigiate cultivar most commonly seen in gardens.
