Metasequoia glyptostroboides — Dawn Redwood

A common and highly-fashionable mid-20th century discovery from China.

A tall, narrow tree with deciduous foliage and redwood-like bark. The side-shoots are opposite, unlike those of the much less common Swamp Cypress. The buds are peculiarly carried beneath the shoots. Small green cones are sometimes produced.
