Platycladus orientalis — Oriental Thuja

A fairly frequent mid-18th century introduction, particularly popular in churchyards and cemeteries.

The foliage is in flat, non-drooping sprays which are usually held somewhat vertically. The weird cones look like little spiders when young and then oddly hooked and lumpy before eventually ripening brown.

‘Elegantissima’ has yellow-tipped foliage; bushy derivative cultivars of this are very common in gardens.
