Populus alba — White Poplar

A common native tree.

Generally a light, open, slanting tree, always showing white foliage, particularly in a breeze. The alternate leaves are strongly lobed on strong growths but almost round on weaker growths. The underside remains bright-white all season. The bark is creamy-grey with rows of black diamonds. Buds are ovoid and white-woolly.

‘Pyramidalis’ (Bolle's Poplar) is sometimes planted, with a fastigiate but spreading form and rather greener foliage.
