x Cupressocyparis leylandii — Leylandii
An accidental Victorian hybrid (of Nootka Cypress and Monterey Cypress), ubiquitous in gardens.
The leaves are similar to, but larger than, those of false cypresses, and the sprays are neither flat (like Nootka) nor truly three-dimensional (like Monterey). Cones are scarce, and not all cultivars produce them.
Yellow cultivars such as ‘Castlewellan Gold’ are highly distinctive, especially in spring; other cultivars, including ‘Haggerston Grey’, ‘Leighton Green’ and ‘Naylor’s Blue’ have more subtle coloration differences. Variegated cultivars such as ‘Silver Dust’ also exist.
